I am a proud graduate of the Baltimore City School System. I know the potential our school system has for good. As a watchdog on the City Council, I also know that there areas where we can improve.

I believe that education is the fundamental equalizer and gateway to success in life. Hence, I created the Education Committee on the City Council in order (1) to ensure that the City Council has a voice in ensuring accountability in our schools, (2) to ensure that government does not become an obstacle to learning, and (3) to ensure that education-related issues receive the expediency and attention that they deserve.

I am not afraid to try new things to educate our children.  We should reward our best teachers, adequately support our new teachers, and force others to be more accountable to the lives of our children

In our most challenged schools, we need to develop a “wrap-around” model so that more support services are centered around the education of the child. Leadership development should be a mandated course for all students, and we should fight as City leaders to promote and expand programs that have proven to be effective, like the KIPP school.

In an effort to ensure that valuable education resources reach our children, I spearheaded the effort for Council oversight of the City’s school budget, and I will continue to fight for the parents and students of Baltimore so all children receive equal opportunity to succeed.
